„Trinational – European – Global“: Partnerships and Networks
The University of Freiburg, at the intersection of the German, the French and the Swiss educational landscape, is predestined to exemplify transnational networking in the sense of positive diversity in teaching and research. In regard to our strategic development, we place our emphasis on internationalisation in concentric circles: the region, Europe, and the world.
Trinational: Eucor – The European Campus
Together with the universities of Basel, Haute-Alsace and Strasbourg as well as the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, the University of Freiburg forms "Eucor - The European Campus". Founded on February 24th, 2016, it is the first European Grouping of Territorial Cooperation (EGTC) that consists entirely of universities. This enables a common strategy in teaching and research, and the development of comprehensive structures for science in the Upper Rhine area.

European: League of European Research Universities (LERU)
The aim of this network consisting of 23 research-focused European universities is an active exchange in the areas of excellent teaching and internationally competitive research. These topics are approached by creating best-practise models for mutual exchange and providing input for higher education politics. LERU regularly publishes reports and recommendations for stakeholders in politics, higher education institutions, and research.

Global: Comprehensive Partnerships and beyond
In addition to the Université de Strasbourg (France), which is already a close partner via “Eucor – The European Campus”, the University of Freiburg has the following "Comprehensive Partners", all of which it shares especially broad and deep connections with, and which enhance our strategic goals:
- Penn State University (USA)
- Nagoya University (Japan)
- Nanjing University (China)
- University of Adelaide (Australien)
Academic Consortium 21 (AC21)
Aiming at a closer collaboration between worldwide research-focused universities, with a special focus on the Asian-Pacific region, AC21 was founded by Nagoya University, one of the University of Freiburg's Comprehensive Partners. The consortium includes more of our Comprehensive Partners: the Université de Strasbourg, Nanjing University, and the University of Adelaide. Since 2015, the University of Freiburg is one of the six members of the network´s Steering Committee. AC21 regularly organises workshops for leadership, young researchers, and students.
